NIGHTMARE

I was born on a night
When the clouds were afire.
Ashes fell
And stung my eyes.
I wept.

Past the flaming clouds
In the shadow of the sun,
Hung the moon.
As I stared through my tears,
The moon became cloaked in blackness,
As though suddenly taken by Death,
Destroyed by some unknown fate.
As I looked closer I saw
Thousands of tiny winged spiders
flying from the distant stars,
Joining thousands of crawling creatures
Already clustered in the moon's dust.
I feared.

Suddenly, they soared toward me
In a curtain of wings
And flashing red eyes
Filled with cold hatred.
I cowered.

In moments, they were upon me,
Creeping over my body
On spiny legs,
Fastening their hungry fangs into my flesh.
I reached my hand to pull them off,
But my fingers were covered with little
Black demons dripping with blood.
My blood.
And more kept coming.
Agonized screams tore the night.
Mine.
I burn.

I must escape them.
They are draining me.
Stealing my life slowly.
I am drowning in pools of my own blood.
My strength ebbs away.
My mind is gray.
Night is closing in.
The stars are fading.

They are gone.
Darkness is here.
The burning pain is gone.
Relief.
I am awake.
